On a snowy morning in February, Stapleford’s new pub is opened by the Mayor of Broxtowe.
Admiral Sir John Borlas Warren to open Tuesday 7th Feb 10am
Recently, Stapleford has lost two pubs: the Happy Man and the Warren Arms. Both were named after Stapleford’s greatest son: Sir John Borlase Warren, but I have a feeling that if Admiral Warren could have seen this latest building to honour his memory, he would be a “happy man” again.
This latest addition to the JD Wetherspoon stable is a beautiful piece of architecture as befits the memory of a great man. It is a solid building, full of character with high ceilings remiscent of a country house. The building is suffused by natural light that is admitted by an enormous glass skylight and tall widows and patio doors.
The interior designers have made this building something really special. The naval theme is elegant and appropriate and there are witty allusions to the medical profession – a nod in the direction that this land was once used as a medical centre, and before that, a doctor’s surgery. The twin themes are executed with subtelty and refinement using etched glass, interesting artwork, and light fittings. One sensational touch, which cannot be described as subtle is a full sized cannon that is the first thing you see when you come though the double frontg doors! If you look over your head you will see a cannon ball embedded in the wall! A stroke of genius!
There is a large main bar area, bright and bustling, and three smaller lounges. The lounges all have cosy little nooks and the furnishings are big and ostentatious with enormous leather sofas and characterful fireplaces. One wall is completely covered by leather bound books.
Real coal fires add to the feeling that the building is a grand country house and the fully openable patio doors will make summer’s evenings a pleasure!
Just a few days to go!
Here’s the latest shot of the Admiral Warren. With just a few days to go now before the opening, it’s looking quite splendid. In this shot you can make out, on the left, the characterful frontage of the excellent John Yeomans opticians.
The Admiral Warren will be opening its doors at 10am on Tuesday the 7th February. Curryandbeer have been invited to take a look around a couple of days earlier so we can review this lovely new pub and take photos. If you want a sneak preview of what surely must be a sensational asset to Stapleford, come and check this page on Sunday when I’ll be able to share my first impressions.
Opening February Feb 2012
JD Wetherspoon has announced that February 7th will see the opening of their much anticipated Stapleford pub, the Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren, an addition that ought to be a considerable asset to the local community and will provide a tremendous shot in the arm for local traders.
The brand new building has been built on the site of the derelict health centre roughly opposite the old Warren Arms on Derby Road which was razed to provide room for a couple of retail outlets, a cause of much dismay to many townsfolk who are understandably proud of the name of this great man who was born in Stapleford. Wetherspoon have taken up the historic name of John Borlase Warren, a good move that will be popular with locals.
I’ll be keeping a close eye on progress, so watch this space for developments!
