Great food and beer in a beautiful village pub
If you’re planning a visit to a village pub, someone has to drive. Right? Not so! A few minutes on the Amberline bus from Derby centre and you’ll be dropped off right at the door of the excellent Hunters Arms.
This pub has a lot to offer. It has all the cosy ambience you crave, but there’s so much more. Delightful staff, sensational beer and hearty pub grub. To top it all, it has a cracking beer garden complete with hanging baskets and pot plants.
Good selection of well-kept cask ale
Since we discovered craft beer, we’ve become particularly focussed on the quality of pubs’ cellars. The Hunters Arms did not disappoint! Starting off with an Oakham Citra was a great choice. Oakham never fail to please, and Citra, at 4.2% is a refreshing start to a session.
Then we noticed that the Slaughterhouse Bar had a cask of Axe Edge. Now, the (recently opened and refurbished Slaughterhouse Bar) is not generally open until 6pm, but it was no problem for the bar staff who were happy to bring the beer straight to our table. All this and table service too! It was delish! Axe Edge is a double IPA 6.8% by the Buxton Brewery. It’s a winner!
At least nine cask beers and three ciders are always available in the Slaughterhouse Bar.
Home cooking and fantastic meal deals
There’s a reasonably priced menu. It’s not extensive but it has all the usual pub grub including vegetarian offerings. We found our food to be well cooked, with generous portions and nicely presented.
They have a great deal on their Thursday curry night where you get a (a choice of three) curries and a drink for £6.95! Saturday night is their pasta night and the offer is on similar lines. These nights are understandably popular and you are advised to book!
Comfy and traditional
The pub is spotless. There’s a variety of furniture, including leather armchairs, plush round-the-wall seating and proper dining tables. Tasteful wall hangings, gentle lighting, vases of flowers all add up to make this pub a home from home.
The staff are exceptionally friendly, polite and helpful. I am so glad to see a pub where people really care. This is the sort of venture that deserves to do very well. Ten out of ten!
