The Taps – Lytham – Lancashire

Lytham’s Aladdin’s Cave

The Taps’ substantial exterior hides what amounts to a museum celebrating the best of local Lancashire life. If you have the opportunity, try to visit this popular pub before it gets crammed so you can take some time to check out the abundant memorabilia. This characterful pub’s walls are festooned with glorious …

Greystones – Sheffield

Beer and music

We had been looking forward to our latest trip to Sheffield for some time. Top of the list was Greystones. This new Thornbridge pub is quite a sight on steep Greystones road, it’s a substantial half timbered building with an impressive frontage.

Light and airy, family friendly pub

High ceilings and large …

Old Poets’ Corner – Derbyshire

The Best Sort of Pub

We visited the Old Poets while out on an coach trip from the Crown Inn, Beeston. The coachful of eager topers all managed to find seats and we were all served by the uber efficient bar staff in moments. I guess they’ve got a lot of experience looking after coach …

Grove Inn – Leeds

Completely Unspoiled and Oodles of Character

Five minutes walk from Leeds City Railway Station and dwarfed by hi-tech high-rise buildings, a little piece of Yorkshire history refuses to budge. It’s nothing short of a miracle that this stalwart has managed to stand fast while office blocks have sprung up literally around it. Somehow the Grove …

Horse and Jockey – Old Basford

Friendly locals’ Pub

One of the things that pleases me most about Castle Rock is the light hand they use in providing direction for their pubs. Every pub is different, and the only thing you can be absolutely sure about is that the beer will be great. The Horse and Jockey is a spendid example …

Vat and Fiddle Pub (Nottingham)

Beer drinker’s paradise The Vat and Fiddle is a wonderful, proper pub with great atmosphere. We regularly travel right across Nottingham to enjoy the serene ambience of this unique pub. It’s only a short stroll away from the train and bus stations so it’s a good contender for a pub crawl. I think I’d rate …

Lincolnshire Poacher – Nottingham

This Castle Rock pub is a firm favorite with CAMRA members and rightly so as it has won numerous awards. It’s part of the Mansfield Road beer trail so you’ll find that the pub fills to capacity as a group on a pub crawl drop in, only to empty again half an hour later. It’s usually packed to capacity in the evenings.

Final Whistle – Southwell

The genius of “Project William”

I am full of admiration for “Project William”. This visionary scheme was devised by Everards to revitalise failing businesses and has allowed pubs like Beeston’s multi award winning Crown “cask ale emporium” to flourish. Avoiding a prescriptive approach, Everards give talented individuals like David Brown free rein to use all …

Hearty Goodfellow – Southwell

Award winning beer garden

Summer busting out all over in early October prompted us to get on the Nottingham City transport 100 service and head for Southwell. I had wanted to visit this charming cathedral town for some time and on a lovely day like this The Hearty Goodfellow was a perfect choice as we’d …
